So yes I was talking about new music business plans and concepts - I’m going to have a digital product coming out plus I’ll also be able to give my services away free to artists with a credit card who can make purchases through my links.
But right now I’m talking about one of my businesses which I very much developed as an example to musicians - that by dressing up as a pirate and doing a children’s birthday party performance, I could generate money by finding an audience, as well as developing performing skills and rapport, as well as the fact that this is right at the core of what I do: this is entertainment business, so there’s plenty of practical considerations to prepare me for possibilities that may occur in future with other types of professional entertainers.
So no I didn’t plan to be a pirate but I wanted to show I could still hustle $150 here and there while running my other businesses just like any musician with a day job needing to raise that extra money to get your music career kicked off.
Well . . . now I’ve actually teamed up with another pirate who is far more into the performance side of the business whereas you know me, I just want to do my amazing marketing blitz and get all the moneys, which of course is realistic because when it comes to kids entertainment the money still flows, parents want to see their kids happy.
But it’s also about providing a valuable service that is high value, though if I’m just doing marketing, where’s my cut? Well this is the situation for many music and band managers that I find themselves in, and raises some interesting questions about how revenue is divided.
The money you make from gigs early on in the piece is so sad it feels wrong to be dipping into the bands pocket. If the other guy is going out there to actually entertain the kids, I feel bad dipping into his pocket for my 20% cut that he worked hard to get.
At the same time you spend 3 years slaving on a brand until he’s getting $1000 an appearance . . . I want my 20%! But that’s not where we are right now.
My thoughts were to basically control the website myself and allowing him to pocket the first $200 from every appearance, and 20% thereafter. That way he can still get his earn on but if his brand takes off due to my hard work I’ll get my cut. The income I make from the website initally will be very minor, and indeed the most benefit working on the website will create is probably in the form of more performance work, whereas I’d be pushing through to a point where the brand had expanded enough to allow a decent amount of money to be made from the site.
So that’s really what we’re talking about, expanding an entertainment brand to the point of profitability - for me, because if it’s not making at least $100 a week for me it will be more of an annoyance than a real entertainment business.
So you’re going to have to read the next post if you want to hear what I’m really projecting for ideas that could seriously make me money as a music marketing and artist management person partnered with a performer on this children’s pirate theme party service.
